Teen kayak star makes 15th at Worlds

A teenage kayaking star from the UK has finished in a more than respectable position at the Adidas Sickline Extreme Kayaking World Championships in Austria.

Finishing in 15th place, Ben Johnston was competing in the event for Great Britain for the first time, which sees the best extreme kayakers go up against each other on the challenging River Oetz. Known to many paddlers the world over as the ‘Eiger North Wall of kayaking’, largely thanks to the Wellerbrücke rapids, it is certainly a little different from a gentle paddle on the River Dee in a kayak for hire.

Also the youngest kayaker competing in this year’s event, the performance was certainly up there for Johnston from Carlisle. The 18-year-old said:

“It was really different. All the paddlers there were well known. It was just a lot better. I didn’t expect to get into the final. I was happy to have qualified. I’m hoping to enter it next year.”

It is yet another strong showing for the rising star.

Earlier in the year he competed in the British Under-18 extreme kayaker championship, finishing first. Not to mention picking up the trophy for the junior European championship and the Junior King of the Alps.

The kayaker added:

“I do get scared but I wouldn’t kayak off something I didn’t think I’d be capable of doing.”

That is advice that anyone sitting in a kayak should remember, whether a pro, a novice or taking part in Kayak trips in Cheshire on a teambuilding day out.
