Supporting the Dee Mile Swim

One of Chester’s best loved traditions takes place at the end of this month.

The Dee Mile Swim is a near 100-year-old river race first held in 1922. Competitors from within a five-mile radius of ‘The Cross’ in Chester’s town centre race for the recognition of being crowned the Dee Mile Champion.

The Dee Mile Swim is in fact competed over a mile and a quarter, but who’s counting? The race is very much a local tradition for locals but you certainly do not need to be from the area to enjoy and support the racers as they try to beat the 2012 record of 19 minutes and 48 seconds. There are individual races for both male and female swimmers, and even an all-comer race for those who do not quite qualify as locals.

The race route flows along the same naturally beautiful locations usually preserved for those who enjoy Chester kayaking. Long range weather forecasts are favourable, so the Dee Mile Swim promises to be a great day out for all the family, and also means that the swimmers may not miss wearing a wetsuit quite so much, which is a tradition still adhered to by those wishing to be crowned champion.

The races are planned to take place on the 30th May 2015, with the 2K race starting at the Red house pub before heading downstream towards the 1K start point before all racers continue on to finish at the Suspension Bridge.

For those tempted by the idea of heading out to support their favourite swimmer, all races will start at approximately 5:15 pm, with the presentations being made shortly after the final swimmer has crossed the finish mark at the Suspension Bridge.
