Full Day – Farndon to Chester in a sit-on-top kayak – Self guided

Journey length: 12 Miles
Journey time: 4 to 6 Hours
Experience: An advantage but not essential, fitness is more important.
Cost: £40 per person

8.30am start at Sandy Lane car park (CH3 5UE).

A good level of fitness is advised for this trip, and familiarity with the outdoors.  Book a shorter trip first if you’re unsure.  Bring plenty of food and water.

Your expedition starts at the historic Farndon-to-Holt bridge right on the England / Wales border.  You’ll paddle through tranquil countryside, miles from civilization.  You’ll pass through a brief section of small easy rapids that’ll spice things up a bit before continuing your journey along the tree lined river, through peaceful meadows.  It’s not unusual to be the only ones on this section of water – it’s like having miles of countryside all to yourself – find yourself a piece of riverbank and enjoy a riverside picnic.

Wildlife is in abundance so make sure you pack your camera!  You’ll pass right through the heart of the Duke of Westminsters’ estate and under the famous blue ironbridge designed by Thomas Telford and built in 1824.

After 8 miles you’ll reach the village of Eccleston, the home of the Duke of Westminster.

Paddle on towards to Chester and you’ll reach the swanky Red House pub and restaurant which has it’s own jetty – pull your kayak ashore and pop in for refreshments.  The trip ends about a mile from the city centre at Sandy Lane jetty next to the sailing club, however if time (and your energy) permits, you can paddle into the city, past the band stand as far as the Weir.  You’ll need to return upstream to the car park at Sandy Lane.

Paddling a kayak for a full day requires a good level of fitness – prepare to have tired arms!  We don’t recommend this trip for those with a history of back, shoulder or arm injuries.  Book a taster session or half day trip if you’re unsure.

This is a self guided trip (no instructor).  You may prefer to join a guided trip.
