Pair break Loch Ness kayaking record

A couple of friends have broken a world record by being the fastest people to cross Loch Ness in a tandem kayak.

Ted Simpson and James Reilly, who are both 21 years old, sang the song ‘I’ll Make a Man Out of You’ from the Disney film ‘Mulan’ and ate mars bars to keep them going throughout their 20 mile kayak journey.

The students took on the challenge in order to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, and were able to raise a total of £1,000.

The childhood buddies had planned to start their kayaking challenge at 9:00 am on Thursday 16th July, however, they were forced to delay their plans by 90 minutes due to the lateness of one of their witnesses, who had a mishap with his car exhaust.

The pair then proceeded to paddle their kayak without a break for more than four and a half hours. They were cheered on by a number of relatives, who were excited to see them take on the challenge, and were also watched by a few bemused people from the local area.

Their feat was also monitored by two time keepers and two witnesses, who were there to officiate for the Guinness World Records.

Simpson and Reilly had been training intensively for nine months to take on the challenge. Their training included everything from half marathon running to four hour gym sessions. These preparations helped them to achieve their challenge in 4 hours 43 minutes and 3 seconds.

If you would like to try out your own challenge, kayak hire in the North West is a great way to get started.
