Local group to paddle the Cheshire ring

A local community group will be kayaking the Cheshire Ring canal route later this month, as it raises more money for charities in the area.

A team from the Middlewich Round Table will tackle the 97-mile route in a clockwise direction.

Starting from the Middlewich entry point, the group will travel along the popular system from Friday 20 to Sunday September 22, taking turns with the paddle. Along the route, which includes 92 locks, two members of the team will be kayaking at any one time, and swapping seats relay style.

One of the most active volunteering organisations in the area, the challenge is being done to boost the fundraising coffers of the Round Table’s local charity fund.

As well as looking for sponsorship, the group is also running a ‘Guess the Time’ competition. Entrants pay £1 and simply have a go at guessing the total time it will take the team to complete the route.

Anyone wanting to have a go at the fun game can get down to the Middlewich British Legion, located on Lewin Street in the town. Whoever guesses correctly, or closest to the time, will win £150. Guests can enter as many times as they like.

Passing through a constantly changing landscape, which varies from the urban sprawl of Manchester City Centre to the pastoral scenes of Cheshire, the route is popularly travelled through the year.

However, for the less committed, kayaking smaller sections is also possible, with kayaks and canoes easy to hire.
