Fundraisers flock to kayaking event

A charity kayaking event which saw participants paddle their way around Hayling Island off the Hampshire coast this July attracted an abundance of participants.

No less than 71 kayakers braved the journey this year, double the number who took to their kayaks for the event in 2014.

The kayakers were aiming to raise money for two good causes – the Royal National Lifeboat Institute and the Fire Fighters Charity.

In total, the paddlers have raised in excess of £10,000 for the charities at the event which has been organised by Hayling RNLI and the Havanat Fire and Rescue service, since its inception 3 years ago. It is believed that this year’s total will be around £8,000 once all of the sponsorship money is collected.

Speaking to The Portsmouth News, one of the Event’s organisers, Mark Pannell said:

“The start was spectacular and the event goes from strength to strength. I was so proud of all who took part and grateful to those who worked to make this so successful. We look forward to next year’s event. The RNLI crew members in their own boats who were supporting us were brilliant and had a busy day.”

Although the kayakers started their challenge in pleasant sunny conditions, it was not long before westerly winds swept in to challenge the kayakers as they paddled across Hayling Bay. However, they persevered and most made it to shore after a brief rest, inspiring people in Chester kayaking clubs to keep up their training and enter similar events in the North.
