Flyboarding to open Chester Raft Race

Today will see the 2014 Chester Raft Race take place on the River Dee.

Always a rambunctious affair, this year promises even more high jinks as one of the country’s best flyboarders is due to open the show.

With the river far more used to the relatively gentle paddling of groups taking canoe trips in Cheshire, flyboarding offers a whole new way to have fun on the water, as well as some above it.

A sport that witnesses a jetpack propel a flyboard up to 20 feet into the air with jets of water, the best riders can put on quite a show with all manner of flips, spins and tricks.

This is how Jay St John will be aiming to wow the crowds, as he launches the event at 10.15 this morning.

It is a show St John is looking forward to, with the flyboard instructor adding:

“It’s great to be a part of such an amazing local event, attracting more visitors to Chester and raising money.”

Presented by the Rotary Club Of Chester, the annual raft race is always popular in the city. A great fundraiser for local organisations too, this year’s nominated charity is Cheshire Young Carers.

St John will be performing stunts in front of the bandstand ahead of the start of the race at 10.30am. With teams of local businesses taking part, the rafts will race against each other, as well as the clock, over the half-mile course, which starts at the rowing club, passes under the foot bridge, travels down the weir, and ends just before the road bridge.
