Chester Regatta – history as it happens

Chester Regatta is one of the oldest events of its kind in the world, and has been watched by kings, noblemen and commoners alike. You can decide which of those brackets you fall into when you watch the 2015 running scheduled for next weekend.

Running from the Red House Pub downstream to Sandy Lane Park, there is plenty of opportunity to view the regatta from the river banks, or you see can see it firsthand from the comfort of your own River Dee canoe hire boat. Whichever way you choose to view the regatta, you can be sure that you will be part of an event entrenched in Chester’s rich history.

It’s very easy to make a day of it by getting to the river early, where you can enjoy the crews warmup followed by the race itself, and watch the winners revel in the celebrations afterwards. Racing for the Victor Ludorum Trophy, each club entrant will be hoping to emulate the 2014 winner in the Overall Category, which was The Royal Chester Rowing Club. There is also the Seniors Category and the Juniors Category, won last year by The Mersey Rowing Club and Merchant Taylors School Boat Club respectively.

After the regatta has ended, there will be plenty of time to visit the historic city of Chester, which is short walk from the river. You can also walk the Roman Walls or visit the Cathedral, which dates back to the 13th Century. If history is not your thing then you can simply relax in one of the many cafes and pubs, or spend some time in retail therapy by walking the famous Rows in the city.

Chester Regatta has always been an important part of English regatta history and, once experienced on June 13th this year, you will want to return year after year to create your own little piece of history.
