Canoeists sought for charity challenge

People that you see regularly canoeing in Cheshire, and likely training on the River Dee, could very well be practising for a fundraising event later this year.

The NSPCC in Warrington is behind the contest, with the hope that people from all over the UK will take part in the all-day event. With its ‘Chasing the Sun’ challenge, the charity will be hoping that fitness enthusiasts are up for an early spring ordeal that will see their stamina and skills put to the ultimate test.

The organisers are on the hunt for volunteers who want to spend the day biking, hiking and canoeing through the beautiful Lake District, to help raise cash for vulnerable children.

Taking place in April this year, the participants will be cycling through the area’s Borrowdale Valley, which runs alongside Lake Derwentwater, before hiking into the spectacular views of the Haystacks. They will then return to kayak their way through the islands of the previously passed Derwentwater.

The challenge will begin at sunrise, with the competitors aiming to chase the sun through the day. The event will end as sunset approaches on the banks of the Derwentwater.

The fund raising effort is generally for teams of two, but it is also possible to register for the adventure on your own. Most importantly, challengers need to have the necessary skills and stamina to get through such an arduous day.

Registrations are being accepted now for the fundraiser, which takes place next month, on Saturday April 26.
